What is mobinomics?

Mobinomics is a niche software system development practice that engineers software-intensive operating systems for open digital operations.

We design and build solutions for telcos, cities and any organisation where core business operations rely on the seamless orchestration of people, processes and technology to deliver a coherent smooth-flowing whole.

Born in the telecommunication domain, Mobinomics blends our deep expertise and problem-solving capabilities to develop operational software systems that underpin service delivery processes.

Who

Mobinomics brings people, systems science, software development and telecoms seamlessly together into one team.

MARK ACTON: MANAGING DIRECTOR

Mark founded Mobinomics in 2005 with the vision of creating a niche software business which could co-create with and service a narrow slices of customers who require laser focus and depth of expertise to solve messy problems.

GUIDO ZSILAVECZ: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

With over 20 years experience in software development in a telecoms environment, Guido has a deep understanding of complex workflow systems and the entire software development process.

Why

We have the right combination of niche domain knowledge, technical ability, experience and risk tolerance to define and solve the challenges that emerge in complex operational delivery environments such as today's telco, city or any organization.

We believe that in the near future, open software systems will be as important as the telecommunications network itself. Without core open software systems, real productivity and customer experience improvements will remain incremental or a mere pipe dream.

How

Our approach matches the context – and by applying a deliberate and considered approach to get the right answer rather than just an answer. We allow patterns to emerge over time and ensure stakeholders decide together what to do.

Telco, city or other similar technical infrastructures are messy, dynamic complex systems - and thinking about them with traditional thinking habits are limited in dealing with them: “Postulating a seamless infrastructure is a strategy whereby the messy reality can be ignored”.

Professional Services

Understanding our customers problems which need to be solved is always our first step in the start of a collaborative journey. A shared understanding provides a solid foundation for ensuring mutually beneficial project engagement.

Mobinomics provides a leading South African converged network operator with professional services for operational support systems (OSS) which realise the Telco ETE service management layer.

Mobinomics provides services through an embedded core team of software professionals across a wide range of disciplines who operate in a highly collaborative mode to fulfill strategic software transformation projects, change requests and maintenance on the software suite.

What we believe

In this section you can explore and learn about our company's approach to designing and building systems and managing complex software projects, some of the academia that sits behind it and how you might experience it when you work with us.

Your experience

When you work with Mobinomics you will experience us working fluidity within your operational environments as they are in reality, not as they appear in PowerPoint presentations. We actively work towards ensuing that all stakeholders are harmonized and that when the inevitable conflicts and turbulences arise that they are engaged with in a productive way - we navigate between the opposite poles of rigidity and chaos.

Getting real

Over the years we have experienced approaches that emphasise processes, structures and specialist skills the way of traditional system builders and integrators. These approaches break down in the face of complex technology projects because they don't match the spaghetti junction density of the systems themselves nor the context in which they are located. It also treats humans as resources that can be managed in the same way as tech components.

Mobinomics employs a different set of principles that allow for both change and stability and look beyond old models of thinking.

Being Human

We believe that being human enables true collaboration. There is no value in leaving ourselves at the front door when we enter the workplace. Listening deeply, allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, and dropping stereotypes is what builds trust - the real coupling of teams.

Map is not the territory

We believe context cannot be ignored. This means we don't blindly apply off-the-shelf consulting frameworks or imported best practices.

Transdisciplinarity

We believe that retaining focus on both ourselves (the nature of the observer) AND the things observed, allows a true transcendence of limits imposed by disciplinary thinking.

The Operating System Layer

We have distilled our thinking on the importance and function of the operating system layer in this foundation essay published in April 2015.

Aslam Khan on co-operation

We discovered Aslam at Agile Africa 2013 - and we immediately recognised that he was walking the path less travelled when it came to appreciating the difference between "software methodology and process" and bringing our humanity into software teams.

Ultra-Large-Scale Systems: The Software Challenge of the Future

From as early as 2006, it has been recognized that traditional approaches to managing large scale software systems are limited. In this book, Ultra-Large-Scale Systems: The Software Challenge of the Future, the authors advocate an alternative foundational view that of socio technical ecosystems.

Thinking... its so important

For a concise dummies guide to common sense and the difficulties associated with thinking about complexity from a traditional scientific perspective, we have found no clearer articulation on the fundamental importance of context and the dangers of de-contextualisation.
